Montaigne's Essais: an exceptionally wide-margined copy of the first complete edition from 1588, in a binding by Bradel

Montaigne, Michel de. Essais. Cinqiesme edition, augmentée d'un troisiesme liure: et de six cens additions aux deux premiers. Paris, Abel l'Angelier, 1588. Engraved title, headpieces and ornamental initials. Quarto (248 x 183 mm). Bound in late 18th century dark red morocco.

This is the first complete, and at the same time last edition published during his lifetime, of Michel de Montaigne’s »Essais« from 1588: an immaculately preserved copy. Not only are they the archetype and eponyms of the literary genre, but as a piece of world literature the »Essais« are still of constant topicality and timeless validity. This appreciation is also reflected in the late 18th century morocco binding of classical elegance by Pierre-Alexis Bradel.
